The results of photochemical hole burning and nonphotochemical hole burning studies are reported for bacteriorhodopsin (BR) and several impurities intentionally doped into thin polymer films;The theory previously proposed to simulate hole shapes in the short burn time limit is extended to examine the phonon sideband hole shapes at arbitrary burn times and at different burn wavelengths. The simulated spectra are compared with experimental data for tetraphenylporphyrin on polystyrene. It is also shown how the simulated spectra may be used to deconvolve the antihole from the hole spectrum;Polarized hole and antihole spectra for tetraphenylporphyrin in a polystyrene matrix are also presented. A correlation between the site distribution functions for the Q[subscript] x and Q[subscript] y states is demonstrated;The studies of hole burning at constant fluence and preliminary results of spectral diffusion of oxazine 720 in polyvinyl alcohol are reported and discussed;Photochemical hole burning of the light-adapted BR and its bathochromic intermediate D[subscript]610 at 1.6 and 90 K are presented. The results are discussed in terms of the degree of homogeneous broadening and the broadening mechanism.
